• blend and segment consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant (CVCC) words, using words starting with continuants like /s, m, f, r/ and /v/;
• decode CVCC words quickly in isolation, and in short sentences; and
• distinguish CVC/CVCC minimal and near-minimal pairs (e.g. ‘hum’ v ‘hump’) when reading sentences.
